The Empire of Tamriel is on the edge. The High King of Skyrim has been murdered. Alliances form as claims to the throne are made. In the midst of this conflict, a far more dangerous, ancient evil is awakened. Dragons, long lost to the passages of the Elder Scrolls, have returned to Tamriel. The future of Skyrim, even the Empire itself, hangs in the balance as they wait for the prophesized Dragonborn to come; a hero born with the power of The Voice, and the only one who can stand amongst the dragons.  The developer of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has posted a fascinating podcast dealing with the game's artistic style. The audio diary from Skyrim's art team explains the brainstorming process behind creating the game's concept art, and also compares Skyrim's Viking-like visual style to its predecessor, Oblivion. The general consensus is that Oblivion was "a bit generic"... while Skyrim will be much more "believable". oblivion download elderscrolls

Skyrim Concept artist Adam Adamowicz explains how the game was initially crafted from an artistic clean-slate:
oblivion game of the year edition skyrim v
"It was, like, completely blue sky. [Executive director] Todd [Howard] said, 'Sit down, and draw a bunch of cool weird s***, and we'll look at it and decide what's worthwhile, and what's really stupid, and we'll take it from there. We want bad-assery. Vikings versus Conan, classic Frank Frazetta, and it's going to be set in Skyrim, and this is a place that's going to be a lot more brutal and gritty: draw a bunch of stuff." Few games do atmosphere like The Elder Scrolls. Sure, you come for the elf bothering and swinging axes into orc's faces but you stay because the place feels so real - another world to live another life in.

Unfortunately, much of this initial concept art ended up on the cutting room floor, with Adamowicz estimating that "probably about 90% of that [early work] didn't get used." Skyrim's lead artist Matt Carofano uses the podcast to explain how Skyrim's visual style will be very different to that of other Elder Scrolls titles:

"Oblivion was a very classic medieval setting, and we felt some of that was a bit generic. We wanted to do something that showed a lot more of the culture of the people who lived there. Skyrim was all about creating a world that seemed believable." I can’t lie, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is one of my most anticipated games for the 2011 Holiday Season. I look at it as a breath of fresh air in a season that will be littered with a batch of high-octane shooters. Bethesda has recently released a multimedia blitz that includes an all new Bethesda Podcast featuring Skyrim, a new concept video, a new concept article titled Completely Blue Sky: The Concept of Skyrim, and a slew of new Skyrim concept art centered around the game. Please check out the links for each of the respective features. The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is set to release on Friday November 11th, 2011 which gives weekend warriors a chance to have a few days of free time to explore Bethesda’s Fantasy RPG world. I’ve already taken off the weekend and don’t plan to see the light of day until I’ve encountered my first dragon or enslaved my first village, whichever comes first. Please check out the Skyrim video below and don’t forget to check back with Platform Nation for all the upcoming info on Skyrim’s inevitable DLC as it surfaces. The actual fighting's been improved a lot since Oblivion's occasional mess of unconnected blade swinging. It's now a much more solid and physical affair to heft your weapon into people's faces. There are also some great finishing moves that gut and slice enemies for a messy finish. You can equip different things in each hand and you can save the most useful combinations as instantly selectable favourites - a sword in your right, fire magic in the left, axe and an ice spell, a bow, whatever. You can then switch depending on what you're fighting.
