Crysis 2 takes place in 2023, three years after the events of the first game, in a destroyed New York City, which has since been evacuated due to alien infestation. The game begins with news footage of ecological disasters, a large outbreak of the "Manhattan" virus, a gruesome disease that causes complete cellular breakdown, civil unrest and panic about an alien invasion by the Ceph, the tentacled, squid-like alien race behind the incident of Crysis. Due to the breakdown in social order within New York City, Manhattan is placed under Martial Law, and under contract from the US Department of Defense, soldiers from Crynet Enforcement & Local Logistics (or simply "CELL"), a private military company run by the Crynet corporation, police the chaos...I had a lot of fun being strong, fast and invisible in Crysis 2. In fact, I pumped in around 25 hours into the 360 multiplayer beta/demo alone. Yes, that was more “Skyline” than any healthy individual would endure voluntarily. When I finally picked up my retail copy of Crysis 2 I found myself far less inspired by multiplayer. Don’t get me wrong, the graphics and map design were solid, and the gameplay was as legendary and original as ever (I love the Nanosuit dynamics), but something intangible, something… mythic was missing. Maybe it was because I could no longer just run up to someone and punch them dead in one hit as they tried to shoot me back in hilarious futility. And yes, my K/D ratio was WAY higher than yours. It’s not cheating if everyone can do it.
That being said, we should have faith in Crytek. Far Cry, Crysis and Warhead are all excellent shooters, and with Crysis 2 the company is getting more exposure than ever outside of the core PC gaming community. Having refined its shooting mechanics, presentation, and artificial intelligence over the years, Crytek's shooter sequel could be the best thing the studio has ever made. At the very least, you know it's going to be a visual spectacle bound to be obsessively tested on every gaming machine on the planet...
I suppose I was not the only one feeling a little empty about Crysis 2 multiplayer: Crysis 2 came no where near surpassing the popularity of the Call of Duty’s and Halo’s of the saturated multiplayer world. The attempt was noble, but old habits die hard. In fact, just this month Major Nelson announced the “top 20 LIVE titles” for the 360. Where was Crysis 2? Lower than a 4 year old game that some call Halo 3. You may have heard of it. In-fact, the last game on the list was Fallout: New Vegas, and that does not even have online multiplayer. How the hell does that work? I think gamers took the Crysis 2 slogans too literally, as multiplayer hit strong, but died fast and quickly became invisible.
Map packs generally provide a title’s multiplayer with a resurgence of popularity, partly due in part to new maps creating a stimulus of variety. But do the new Crysis 2 maps provide multiplayer with enough flash and thunder to rekindle interest and move Crysis 2 beyond reach of Reach? Or will this be another mere flash in the proverbial steel and titanium pan??? Crytek's been at the forefront of graphical achievement for years now. Crysis is still one of the first games people install when they get new hardware, even though the game came out in 2007. Now the company is finally developing something multiplatform. Not surprisingly, it's a shooter. Perhaps to the dismay of some PC purists, it sounds like the core Crysis formula is being altered somewhat to create a more funneled, streamlined experience. But honestly, is that really a bad thing? For now we can't really say for sure.
