If you never understood the appeal of Facebook games like "FarmVille"  or "Mafia Wars," social game maker Zynga is launching a new combat game aimed squarely at you.

"Empires & Allies" is Zynga's first strategy combat game that the company describes as a "CityVille Meets Risk." The combat element departs from Zynga's bread and butter games like FarmVille and Mafia Wars, which are mostly played by women aged 25 to 44, a Zynga executive said recently.

In Empires & Allies, evil enemy forces have invaded a thriving, multi-island world. Your mission is to build army units, recruit or invade friends (prepare for a bombardment of Facebook status updates), and derive clues from allies and villains. Fund your armies by collecting rent on huts and cottages, and choose your battleground: air, land, or sea.

Empires & Allies debuts on Wednesday in 12 languages: Malay, Korean, and Norwegian (for the first time), English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Turkish and traditional Chinese. Social gaming giant Zynga is launching its latest game tomorrow—Empires & Allies, the company’s first strategy combat game. Zynga is going big with this launch, debuting the game on Facebook in 12 languages (CityVille only launched  in 5 languages). Zynga says this is the gaming company’s most social title to date.

Empires & Allies, which is the company’s first title to be launched out of Zynga’s Los Angeles studio, is set on a sprawling multi-island game board. The game itself is a cross between FarmVille and CityVille in terms of the layout and overall feel. There are two main parts to the game. First, players aim to build a island-nation by arming themselves against enemy forces and preparing for battle. Second, throughout the game, players build army units, recruit friends, and encounter allies and villains as fight their way across enemy-held territories on the quest to defeat the final villain. The idea of the story-driven game is to build an empire and then to protect it and just some of the options open to players are to invade others, form alliances or establish army units. There are more than 30 characters available in the story and it’s designed so that casual gamers can easily catch on.
