Published and now partially removed boxart suggests motion camera support for upcoming military shooter
Boxart for Ubisoft's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier released on Xbox.com yesterday appeared to confirm Kinect support for the game.
As spotted by CVG, the banner of the game says "Better With kinect", suggesting optional support for the peripheral.
However, the art was quickly removed and replaced with a version omitting any mention of Kinect. Note, though, that the smaller version of the cover to the left still boasts Kinect livery.
Future Soldier was recently delayed until Q1 2012, though whether this was due to Kinect-related development work remains unconfirmed. The trailer also shows some of the game's mechanics -- you can slide into cover or sprint up to an enemy with your shield and knock him or her over -- and high-tech tools that are at players' disposal. Characters are shown going invisible and at one point have some sort of aura surrounding them (a shield, perhaps?).
As a free-to-play game, it will, naturally, be supported by microtransactions; premium items are described as something that can "fully personalize [players'] experience." That doesn't rule out the possibility of being able to buy more than just cosmetic items. The ability to buy power-ups or weapons in F2P games can turn off players who want to play for free, as they feel that doing so puts them at a disadvantage. The purple Kinect Banner was present in the Ghost Recon: Future Soldier entry, insinuating that we may possibly see Kinect compatibility with the game at launch. While there has been no official statement, this will certainly fuel the rumor mill until it is either confirmed or denied. Ubisoft is developing a free-to-play online game based on the Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon franchise.
Ghost Recon Online is a downloadable, multiplayer shooter that will enter a closed beta period this summer. Ubisoft is not the only major video game publisher to adopt the free-to-play concept for its franchises. Electronic Arts recently released a free-to-play game based on Battlefield. Ubisoft will publish Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online, a free-to-play version of its popular special-ops shooter series, for the PC later this year.
The publisher said Tuesday that the game would enter a closed beta test this summer, for which players can sign up now.
Ghost Recon Online, which Wired.com got to play at a sneak preview event last week, is a trimmed-down but intense version of the popular third-person shooter series that relies less on twitchy mouse clicking and more on thoughtful strategy.

The main game is free to play; Ubisoft will make money by selling premium in-game items. The emergence of freemium gaming started over the past few years with smaller publishers, but as of late the model has begun to attract industry powerhouses like Ubisoft. Free-to-play games are, generally, free for a reason. But, despite questionable gameplay and debatable levels of fun, some free-to-play games started making tons of money, and traditional game publishers started to take notice. Companies like PopCap and SOE have seen success with free-to-play games, and now Ubisoft has decided to jump into the mix with "Ghost Recon Online."
"Ghost Recon" is a bit of a surprising choice for Ubisoft's first free-to-play. After all, free games tend to draw in casual gamers rather than the hardcore audience (which is what the franchise is known for). Ubisoft sees that as an untapped market of shooter fans who are looking for free alternatives to "Counter-Strike."
"Ghost Recon Online" is just that. It's a squad-based, objective-heavy third-person shooter where two teams battle it out over a handful of wartorn maps. The gameplay feels quite similar to the "Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter" games on Xbox 360, albeit designed for mouse/keyboard controls. "Online" is still heavily focused on cover (it won't take more than a couple shots to down your soldier) and team tactics often win the day. Ubisoft is crafting a free-to-play online version of its popular "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon" shooter videogame.
"Ghost Recon Online" is a deviation from the French videogame titan's roots making packaged titles for videogame consoles and comes with the rocketing popularity of online "social games" supported by ads or in-game transactions.

"With 'Ghost Recon Online,' and other major upcoming projects, Ubisoft is creating online experiences that allow our fans to stay connected to their favorite brands and to continually receive new content and game play."
The third-person shooter game based on Clancy's hit espionage novels is being developed by Ubisoft Singapore for online play using personal computers.
Limited testing of the multi-player game was to begin in coming weeks.
