Free The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim

Over five years ago, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was released for PC, Playstation 3, and perhaps most importantly Xbox 360. For Bethesda, its timing was impeccable. Prior to Oblivion, the Elder Scrolls series was an extremely well-respected but somewhat niche PC franchise. After its release in 2006, at a time when the Xbox 360 was starved for good titles, the series was finally able to break its way into the main stream, and millions of new players entered the mystical world of Tamriel. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim fills these large footsteps readily and positively advances and extends the Elder Scrolls franchise in a big way. Simply put, this is the best Elder Scrolls game to date and one of the best games this generation. Here’s why.

the elder scrolls v skyrim trailerLike all good Elder Scrolls games, you begin your journey through Skyrim with your character hitting rock bottom. In this case, that means nearly being executed for being a suspected rebel arrested while crossing the border into Skyrim. Thankfully, you are not executed (spoiler alert!) but are saved at the last minute by a sudden dragon attack, the first any resident of Skyrim has seen in hundreds, if not thousands, of years. After a short and exciting tutorial mission, you are set loose upon the massive and entirely open game world. You can move forward with the game’s primary quest discovering more about your Dragonborn heritage and what it means for the ever growing dragon menace, pick a side and fight the good fight in the nation’s morally-gray civil war, or simply load up with a weapon or two, pick a direction to walk in, and see what you can find.

the elder scrolls v skyrim countdownThe realm of Skyrim is a strikingly beautiful one. Long mountain ranges jut up from the horizon in all directions leading to stunning, fog-lined vistas, cities carved directly out of the side of mountains, and dank, roughly-hewn dungeons spidering their way far underground. Dwemer ruins make their fortunate return and lead to some of the game’s most visually impressive and culturally interesting locations in the game. Bethesda finally decided to do away with the extremely aged Gamebryo engine that brought us Oblivion,

Fallout 3, and even Fallout: New Vegas. While it was, in some respects, even looking a big haggard at the time of Oblivion’s release, it wasn’t 100% known prior to Skyrim’s announcement whether or not they would finally make the jump to a new engine. Thankfully for us, Bethesda put in the time and money on a new engine that is absolutely breathtaking. Character animations are better than ever, landscapes retain a massive amount of detail regardless of your distance from them, and individual items are extremely detailed and crisp looking. Certain levels of texture pop-in do occur off and on, at least while playing on the Xbox 360, but not nearly as badly as many other triple-A titles we have seen this year.

the elder scrolls v skyrim full demo part 3 When The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion came out years ago, it addicted a different kind of role-playing adventurer than the ones that would normally be playing, say, the Final Fantasy games.  Rather than working through a tactical-style battle, you would simply venture forward in a tormented world, battling enemies using a variety of weapons, skills, spells and other goods to stay alive – all from a first-person perspective.  It truly is a splendid game, and one that would pave the way for an even better sequel.  You might want to set some time aside for this gem – and I don’t mean a mere couple of hours.

Skyrim once again returns you to the land of Tamriel, where everything isn’t quite as peaceful as you’d like for it to be.  Stormcloaks are banding together to take on imperial forces; villagers can be demented by the smallest of changes; individuals can sometimes be the thing that makes a difference between typical living and anarchy; and then there are the dragons.  These hovering beasts come flying all over the place and don’t go down with the mere strike of a sword to the head.  Nope, they require tactical strategy to bring down, the kind of which, once properly applied, becomes a hearty award once they crumble at your feet.  This is one game that’s sure to keep you busy.

There is a story here, but it’s mere background writing to the epic quest that lies ahead in Skyrim.  Let’s put it this way – the game came out on the 11th and we’ve needed ALL this time just to get enough stuff ready for the review, two and a half weeks later – and that’s counting Thanksgiving.  The amount of replay value found within Skyrim is insanely staggering.  If the main quest doesn’t intrigue you enough, there are the side quests, ranging from teaming up with allies to take back a zombie-infected area to finding a lost dog, whose significance becomes more near and dear as you continue onward.  It’s really more about the journey than the destination here, but the emotional involvement is off the chart, and you feel compelled to do everything you can in this world.

the elder scrolls v skyrim leaked manual The skills, spells and weapons you can wield in Skyrim are also unprecedented, as well as the customization options for your warrior.  When you start, you can choose between various races, sexes, and other small options, and from there, your warrior grows with you, and you become accustomed to new tools and abilities, all of which can help you one way or another in bringing down these wily beasts.  The battle system seems a bit laborious at first, as you eventually have to work your way to get more proper skills down the line, but it’s all for the best and, in a way, a learning experience to help you become a greater battle machine.  It’s truly amazing how involving it is – not to mention accessible.  We haven’t seen an interface that’s been this easy to use in a while.

No matter where you go in Skyrim, you’ll be surrounded by dazzling sights, whether it’s a snow-covered mountain that harbors a few beastly secrets, or a village that goes from downright peaceful to ape-shit bonkers with the killing of one chicken.  The animation detail is superb, especially on the dragons, and the lighting also plays a huge part in the game.  Just try going through a darkly lit dungeon without being in awe from the flames that light up around the walls from your torch.  There are a few glitches here and there, which might throw you off, but overall, this is a wondrous little effort – and it’s bound to get better once Bethesda uploads its upcoming patch.

The sound is equally impressive, with plenty of epic music to accompany you in spurts, along with quality voice acting and sound effects.  What’s more, the development team at Bethesda Game Studios has actually put some thought into the dialogue, so it doesn’t seem like it dredges on with nonsense.  There are characters that sound quite meaningful throughout, and there’s a surprising amount of comic relief as well.  Not as much to throw off the tempo of dragon killing, but more like a comfort support, to let you know that the world isn’t completely full of noble types.  It’s nice to see Bethesda still keep the human side of the game in consideration, despite the dragon populace.
