The financial site Les Echos today revealed figures that confirm a current trend in gaming market: the poor health of boxed game sales, and growth of game sales dematerialized. Thus, in France and the United States, sales of boxed games are down 25%: 6.65 million units sold during the first quarter of 2012 against 8.9 million in the first quarter 2011.
This decline is partly due to the growth experienced by digital sales, and of course if it affects more strongly the field of PC games (where the platforms are very successful downloads), the market for physical sales on consoles is also hit hard, as falls by 18% in the first quarter of 2012. A publisher like Electronic Arts also expects that digital sales revenue for 2012 amounted to 30% of its total turnover (against 10% three years ago). These data, which are probably qu'enfoncer open doors, confirm one thing: whether you agree or disagree with this change, the future is to dematerialisation. Moreover, the video game retailers are already preparing for this mutation.
